Preparing Your Car for a UK Winter: A Practical Checklist
During winter in the UK, vehicles can be affected in multiple ways, from extremely cold, snowy and icy mornings to wet roads. Some preparation can help to avoid vehicle breakdowns as well as the inevitable stress that the winter months will bring.
Let’s look at your battery. It’s freezing outside and that’s bad news for batteries. It makes it difficult for batteries to hold a charge and cold weather is the #1 killer of batteries. If your battery is older than 4-5 years old and you’ve experienced issues with slow starts, you should have your battery tested before winter even starts.
Your tires need to be inspected as well. In wet or icy conditions, tread depth is critical because it helps your tires maintain grip as they clear away water. Many drivers also opt to switch to winter tires during the colder months, which are engineered to perform better when the temperature drops below 7 degrees Celsius.
Be sure to check your washer fluid and wiper blades. Visibility can quickly reduce in winter conditions—be it rain, sleet, or spray from other cars—and worn wiper blades can create hazardous streaks on the windshield. Top up your washer fluid with actual screen wash instead of plain water to help prevent your washer fluid from freezing in the pipes.
It’s also worth checking your antifreeze levels and ensuring your coolant mixture is appropriate for the temperatures ahead. A weak mixture can lead to freezing in the system, which can damage your engine.
It is also a good idea to prepare a mini winter kit for your car. A torch, ice scraper, blanket, some snacks, and water are good items to keep in your boot, just in case you get stuck in bad weather or delayed for a long time.
Taking one or two hours to run through these checks before winter helps your car’s safety and reliability over the next few months.
