Tips on Fleet Management

If you have ever been involved in fleet management, or are responsible for the efficiency and effectiveness of a fleet of vehicles, you will bear me witness that it is a complicated job. Whether you are responsible for 5 or 100 vehicles, a fleet manager’s job is not that easy. As a fleet manager, there are many considerations that you need to take on board. They include: health and safety, maintenance, fuel efficiency, driver performance and the exact position of the vehicle. All these considerations make this undertaking a complex task. However, there a few tips that can help you in managing your fleet. They include the following:

  1. Emphasise on the use of company provided cars.

The reason you should emphasise on the use of company provided cars is because you do not have to reimburse your employees after doing their work. If you allow your employees to use their own vehicles, the costs of reimbursement will be very high. In addition, this will go a long way in reducing liability issues.

  1. Utilise all the vehicles

Do not allow vehicles to stay in the lit without being used. It is always advisable that you make use of all vehicles in your fleet to generate revenue. Remember that if you allow a vehicle to stay in the lot without being used, it is only depreciating and generating nothing. This just adds to you your expenses. If you are keen enough you will discover that each vehicle actually costs a little amount of money to maintain. If you let all vehicles get used, they will generate more revenue for you.

  1. Know your costs

It is always advisable that you determine your indirect and direct costs incurred by the fleet so that you can aim at lowering them. The aim of your business is to generate profits. This is the reason you should ensure that your costs do not overshadow the expenses. Some of the indirect costs include driver downtime and customer satisfaction. You should keep all these costs at the bare minimum.

  1. Have qualified personnel.

You should not allow your vehicles to be driven by quacks. These people will only cause accidents thereby damaging your vehicles. In addition, accidents normally escalate the costs since you have to repair the vehicles that have been involved in the accidents. However, to mitigate this, always check the driving records of each and every employee. Make a point of taking them for training so that they can learn new skills of driving now and then.

  1. Use the latest management software to keep track of the maintenance schedules of your fleet.

Managing a fleet of vehicles is not that easy. You have to keep on monitoring the maintenance of the fleet now and then. This is the reason you need to have the latest management software for efficiency purposes.

Fleet management needs you to be very responsible. You need to always make follow ups whenever the drivers are away. Do not compromise on anything. You can even fit all vehicles with a tracking device so as to protect your company against the risk of drivers using your vehicles for unauthorised personal use. Management of a fleet of vehicles calls for a lot of dedication and commitment. If you are a manager and you specialise in fleet management, the above mentioned tips will help you manage your vehicles well.
