Keeping an Eye on your Exhaust
It is important you look after your car’s exhaust, as it is one of the most important components in terms of safety and fuel consumption. A problematic exhaust could cause your car to have serious issues, or it may be wasting a lot of fuel. However, the exhaust is a long way away from you as a driver, so you will need to physically check it and be aware of any changes.
One of the main things you can do is listen out for noises. If you hear something unusual, see if it is coming from your exhaust pipe. It may be that it has become dislodged and needs tightening – the noise could be the exhaust bashing the car. A chugging sound might be a sign of a blockage, and hissing could indicate that there is a leak somewhere. The silencer can also become damaged over time, so listen out for unusual or sudden rises in volume.
